This brief guide contains five questions families and friends should ask when searching for a treatment program. It contains detailed information about why the question is important as well as additional treatment resources.
This guide is not age-sensitive so keep in mind the unique needs of your child and use this resource in conjunction with the Questions to Ask Treatment Providers, which focuses on the specific treatment needs of young people.
How To Use

Who Should Use
Anyone can use this guidebook to better understand the process of seeking treatment for a substance disorder; it may be helpful for parents of young adolescents (12-16); parents of older teens/young adults (17-25); and parents of adult children.
Community Resource
This resource was created by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), which is represented under the National Institutes of Health with a mission to advance science on the causes and consequences of drug use and addiction and to apply that knowledge to improve individual and public health.
NIDA supports and conducts basic and clinical research on drug use, its consequences and the underlying neurobiological, behavioral and social mechanisms involved. NIDA works to ensure the effective translation, implementation and dissemination of scientific research findings to improve the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders.
